Writer's picture: Doctor Anywhere ThailandDoctor Anywhere Thailand

This year, Thailand is facing a more severe influenza outbreak compared to previous years. It is estimated that the number of cases could reach 903,446 throughout the year, with peak infection rates occurring during the rainy season (August – October) and winter season (January – March).

Why is this year's influenza particularly concerning?

According to the latest data from the Department of Disease Control, over 107,570 cases have already been reported from the beginning of the year to mid-February, with 9 deaths recorded. The trend indicates that the outbreak in 2025 is more severe than the five-year average.

Influenza spreads easily through droplets from coughing and sneezing or by touching contaminated surfaces. High-risk areas include schools, offices, shopping malls, and public transportation.

Circulating Influenza Strains

Laboratory tests have identified the most prevalent influenza strains this year:

  • A/H1N1 (2009) – 41.38%

  • B – 37.9%

  • A/H3N2 – 26.72%

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

Everyone is encouraged to get the flu vaccine, especially those at risk of severe complications, including:

  1. Pregnant women (12–20 weeks gestation)

  2. Children aged 6 months – 2 years

  3. Patients with chronic diseases (COPD, asthma, heart disease, kidney failure, diabetes, cancer undergoing chemotherapy)

  4. Elderly aged 65+

  5. Individuals with neurological disabilities who cannot care for themselves

  6. Thalassemia patients and immunocompromised individuals (including HIV patients with symptoms)

  7. Individuals with obesity (Weight >100 kg or BMI >35)

Why is the Flu Vaccine Important?

Vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of infection and severe illness. While it may not provide 100% immunity, it significantly lowers the chances of complications like pneumonia, asthma attacks, and heart failure.

How to Protect Yourself?

Besides vaccination, follow these preventive measures:

✅ Avoid close contact with sick individuals

✅ Wash hands frequently with soap or alcohol-based sanitizers

✅ Wear a face mask in crowded areas

✅ Avoid touching your face, especially the eyes, nose, and mouth

✅ If feeling unwell, stay home and isolate to prevent spreading the virus
